It was Caryn Greenberg's first time shopping at Purple, but the 47-year-old from Port Washington was already planning her next visit as she eagerly snagged a gray suede Celine bag and a limited-edition Louis Vuitton for about half the retail price.

"Once you start you get hooked--it's like a treasure hunt," co-owner Dee Paris says of consignment shopping. "Every time you come you find different things."

Greenberg was on the prowl for something original, and she came to the right place. The pristine store is filled with limited-edition designer handbags from vintage Chanel to Hermes, ranging from $1,000 to $5,000.

"I love designer labels, but you can't always afford to buy the newest merchandise," Greenberg said. "When you consign you can get what you love at better prices."

Handbags, which start at around $200, are the biggest sellers, but Purple has Chanel jackets and costume jewelry, Dior and Pucci cocktail dresses, mink coats and Prada and YSL shoes, all in mint condition. About 30 percent of the store's merchandise has never been worn, and everything has been dry-cleaned.

Empowering quotes for women hang on the walls, and two percent of sales and many items are donated to the Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

"The idea was first to create a place that will benefit women that need help financially--not just those who suffer from domestic abuse but also those who have gone through nasty divorces and have nothing left but their clothing and jewelry to sell to support their kids," says co-owner Silvana Galasso.

Select merchandise is almost always on sale, and blowout markdowns are made toward the end of each season.

Consign: Designer items that are either from the last three years or vintage will be accepted if they are dry-cleaned, in season and in top condition. Consignors receive 50 percent of the sale price. Make an appointment by calling 516-767-7670.
