There are many Sandy relief efforts across Long Island collecting sorely needed supplies aimed to help families get back up and running.
Village East Gifted (VEG), an after-school enrichment program for gifted and talented students in located in Huntington and at the West Hills Day Camp, are running an infant-relief drive to help the littlest victims of superstorm Sandy.
Every year, VEG organizes “community initiative” projects to help its students plan and implement creative ways to help those in need. Now, they're helping babies who may have lost their parents, homes, belongings and any quality of life they once had.
If you're looking to help your children start their own infant relief drive, check out these 10 steps from Village East Gifted.
Step 1: Decorate the biggest box you can find using brightly-colored markers, paint, construction paper, shredded paper, recycled materials (avoid sharp objects), wrapping paper, yarn, ribbons, pictures and handmade ornaments. Feel free to make more than one box.
Step 2: Obtain permission from an authority allowing you to drop off your decorated box at a heavily populated location, for example, your school, activity center, temple, church, local store and library.
Step 3: Take a picture of you with your box.
Step 4: Ask the principal of your school if you can write an article about your relief effort project for the school bulletin or local family newspaper.
Step 5: Write a speech about Sandy and your relief efforts and present it to your class, school, community group, library, temple and/or church.
Step 6: Create a poster with pictures and articles demonstrating the efforts of the storm along with a poem or story you have written about why you have organized this relief drive. You can also write a song, poem or play, too.
Step 7: Search the Web (with a parent) to find where babies are being sheltered on Long Island. Ask your parents to call the shelter with you and see when you can drop off your box of supplies.
Step 8: Schedule a day to bring your ”filled” box home from where you had placed it.
Step 9: Bring your filled box to the location you have selected.
Step 10: Hand-deliver (if possible) an item from the box to an infant or parent and see the smiles on their faces when they receive it.
If you are a family in need of infant supplies right now, let VEG know by emailing email@example.com and they will arrange to deliver a box to you as soon as possible.
