Long Island family performer Darlene Graham has thrown down the gauntlet: She and her Shades of Green Band are hoping to lead the largest Baby Shark dance challenge ever at noon on Aug. 25 at the Smith Haven Mall in Lake Grove, and she’s inviting as many families as possible to join in.
“We’re going to do it live with the audience, whoever is there,” Graham says. “That’s how things go viral, this last-minute kind of scurrying to do an event like this.” Graham announced the plan on her Facebook Page on Aug. 23.
Graham and the band will be performing outdoors on the main stage as part of the Smith Haven Mall’s Back to School Blast. They’ll also be performing the Baby Shark song at 4 p.m., she says.
The Baby Shark dance has been sweeping Long Island and the world, with the original video produced by a Korean education startup clocking in at more than 1 billion views. The words and moves are simple. The song starts with “Baby Shark doo doo doo doo doo doo” and then repeats with different members of the shark family — Mommy, Daddy, Grandpa, Grandma. Arm movements go along with each family member.
“It’s such a catchy tune,” Graham says. “I’ve been singing it all summer in classes and with the band. This is something new and fresh that’s fun and silly.” Graham says she plans to pull family members from the audience to come on stage and represent each role.
