Kids ages 10 and older can take the United States Power Squadron’s America’s Boating Course to learn about personal safety on Saturday, June 10, and Tuesday, June 13, at the Long Island Maritime Museum, 88 West Ave., West Sayville.
This is a classroom course. It runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 10, with a review and exam from 7 to 9 p.m. June 13. “The water can be fun, but it’s also very, very dangerous if you’re not cautious,” says Bob Bernstein, assistant district education officer for Long Island.
The class includes both kids and adults. Those who pass the exam will receive a New York State-issued boating certificate, Bernstein says. The class covers various types of boats and their uses, including personal watercraft, sailboats and speedboats. The class also covers federal and state boating laws, safety equipment, accidents and emergencies and more.
Cost is $75 per person and includes class materials. Advance registration is required at 631-854-4974.
