Ahoy there, mateys! Monday, Sept. 19, is International Talk Like a Pirate Day, which means thousands of lubbers around the world will unleash their inner pirates. Planning on throwing a pirate-themed party for your kids? Want to wear knickers and an eye patch to work? Here's a primer for all things pirate:
This unique holiday was created in 1995 by John Baur (Ol' Chumbucket) and Mark Summers (Cap'n Slappy) of Albany, Oregon. It was their vision that every Sept. 19, everyone in the world should talk like a pirate, which means swapping "hello" for "ahoy, matey" when greeting people.
According to the official International Talk Like a Pirate Day website, there are five basic words that will help you shiver up your timbers and adopt some pirate language for the day:
* Ahoy! -- "Hello!"
* Avast! -- Stop and give attention, such as "Check it out" or "No way!"
* Aye! -- "Why yes, I agree most heartily with everything you just said or did."
* Aye aye! -- "I'll get right on that sir, as soon as my break is over."
* Arrr! -- This can mean "yes," "I agree," "I'm happy."
Facebook as a pirate
It's easy to switch the language on your Facebook page to Pirate. Here's how: On the right-hand side of your News Feed, below the sponsored ads, you'll see five small links. Click on the "English (U.S.)" link and you'll be taken to a page that allows you select a language. Look for "English (Pirate)." Click the link and your page will appear in pirate lingo.
