Claire's, the popular jewelry and accessories store for young women and girls, has pulled some of its makeup products that may contain asbestos.
WFLA reports a mother first raised concern over her 6-year-old daughter's glitter makeup kit purchased at a Claire's in Rhode Island. An independent lab's tests found it contained Tremolite Asbestos, a toxic cancer-causing material that has been linked to Mesothelioma, which is one hundred percent fatal.
Kristi Warner, who works for the Deaton Law Firm in R.I., says Tremolite Asbestos were also found in 17 more Claire's makeup products purchased in nine different states. Asbestos, once commonly used for building insulation, has been found to lead to cancers and tumors on internal organs.
"You assume that when you're purchasing it, it is safe," Warner told Providence TV station WPRI.
Claire's quietly announced a nationwide recall on Twitter Saturday, but news has spread following the holidays.
"We have taken the precautionary measure of pulling the items in question from sale," Claire's said in a statement. "Once we have more information and have the results of the investigation we will take the necessary action. If you have items you wish to return in the interim period we will issue a refund."
An official recall has not been issued, but the company says it has pulled the following products for the time being:
Aqua Glitter Kit
Jeweled Heart Kit
Pink Flip Phone Kit
Pink Jeweled Star Kit
Pink Jeweled Rectangle Kit
Pink Jeweled Heart Kit
Shiny Black Plastic Makeup Kit with Handle
