Remember when you plotted and planned and dreamed about your wedding cake? The fun doesn't have to stop just because you have kids.

In fact, creating a cake can be even more exciting because you aren't restricted to a simple white, four-tiered number with a few roses on top.

These outrageously fabulous Long Island bakeries make some funky, crazy, fun birthday cakes.

Manhattan Sweets Boutique Bakery

547 Main St., Islip, 631-277-3200

Specialty: If your child can dream it, they can bake it. They'll do every character imaginable, as well as cars, fish and trains. There really is no limit here, and the attention to detail is great.

Allergies: The bakery does not offer allergy-free cakes.

Best Flavors: Rainbow cookie cake, which is yellow, red and green inside

Average Price: Specialty cakes run $4 to $6 a slice.

La Bonne Boulangerie

125 W. Broadway, Port Jefferson, 631-473-7900 and 62-47 Route 25A, East Norwich, 516-624-8900

Specialty: Picture a three-dimensional character cake that can be life-size.

Allergies: Nut-free, dairy-free and gluten-free cakes available.

Best Flavors: More than 50 types of fillings are available, but the signature filling is cannoli cream.

Average Price: This varies widely due to the amount of labor involved, the construction of the cake and the degree of artistry needed. A basic square cake for 25 to 30 guests starts at $85.

Dortoni Bakery

3264 Hempstead Tpke., Levittown, 516-796-3033

Specialty: Sculpted three-dimensional fondant cakes. Characters may look like they're crawling, jumping or dancing off the platter.

Allergies: Eggless, gluten free, nut-free options are offered.

Best Flavor: Red velvet with cream cheese

Average Price: The 3-D sculpture cakes range from $200 to $800, depending on the level of detail and size.

Riesterer's Bakery and Café

282 Hempstead Ave., West Hempstead, 516-481-7636 and 96 Seventh St., Garden City, 516-741-0030

Specialty: Cupcake-decorating kits so your child can throw a cupcake party. Icing bags, frosting and freshly baked cupcakes are supplied. Alternatively, you could have the cupcake- decorating party at the bakery. If there won't be time for the kids to decorate cupcakes, you can buy fancy, pre-decorated cupcakes here with characters on top.

Allergies: The cupcakes and icing are nut-free.

Best Flavor: Chocolate cupcakes with fudge icing

Average Price: Cupcake- decorating kits come out to $3.20 per cupcake, including the icing bag.

Cieslaks Modern Bakery

235 S. Wellwood Ave., Lindenhurst, 631-226-0697

Specialty: Strawberry shortcake with cream on top

Allergies: The bakery isn't nut-free.

Best Flavors: Banana custard and Bavarian cream also are popular.

Average Price: This ranges, depending on the time of year. Since the bakers put so much fruit into the strawberry shortcake, the tab changes depending on the market price of the fruit. A banana custard cake for 20 with buttercream is $34.

Benkert's Bakery & Catering

2216 Middle Country Rd., Centereach, 631-585-8618

Specialty: Extreme-cake designs. Does your child want a race car cake that your supermarket can't duplicate? Or maybe she wants ice skates -- in cake form. Bring a photograph or describe a vision -- they'll copy it.

Allergies: The bakery will accommodate most allergies.

Best Flavors: Raspberry mousse

Average Price: Ranges from $3 to $7 a slice

Buttercooky Bakery

217 Jericho Tpke., Floral Park, 516-354-3831 and 140 Plandome Rd., Manhasset, 516-627-1600

Specialty: This bakery is known for a pull-away cupcake cake -- using cupcakes as a base, frosted together. When it's time to serve it, you pull the cupcakes apart into individual cupcakes. They can be baked into characters, including Elmo, Batman and the "Toy Story" characters.

Allergies: The entire bakery is peanut-free.

Best Flavors: Chocolate fudge, red velvet

Average Price: Cupcakes range from $1.95 to $3.75. Pullaway cupcakes vary by character; an Elmo cupcake cake for 20 is about $90.

Magic Fountain

9825 Main Rd., Mattituck, 631-298-4908

Specialty: Homemade ice-cream cakes

Allergies: The cakes can be made without nuts.

Best Flavors: Choose anything from the standards to more exotic flavors, such as cotton candy and salted caramel.

Average Price: A 9-inch cake with decoration that can serve up to 15 starts at $29.
