Family-friendly performances in April on Long Island

Children love watching their favorite characters come to life on stage, and there's no shortage of theatrical events on Long Island. Since many of the shows require some forethought, here's a sampling of family-friendly shows throughout April to help you plan a fun-filled day.

"Jungle Book" at the Carriage House Theater, Vanderbilt Mansion (180 Little Neck Rd., Centerport) on Saturdays and Sundays in April at 1 p.m. Check out this children's production based on the book by Rudyard Kipling. Price: $10 adults, $8 children.

"The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley" at John W. Engeman Theater (250 Main St., Northport) on Saturdays at 11 a.m. and Sundays at 10:30 a.m. in April (except for April 20). Based on the 1964 children's book written by Jeff Brown, the show lets the audience follow along as Stanley Lambchop scours the globe. Price: $15.

"Dora the Explorer Live: Dora's Pirate Adventure" at Bellmore Movies (222 Pettit Ave., Bellmore) on Saturdays in April at 11 a.m. as well as Monday, April 14, Tuesday, April 15, Wednesday, April 16, Thursday, April 17 and Friday, April 18 at 11 a.m. Join Dora and her best buddy, Boots the Monkey, as they embark on a trip to Treasure Island. Kids will be able to meet the cast after the show. Price: $10.

"The Wiz" at Riverhead High School (700 Harrison Ave., Riverhead) on Friday, April 4, and Saturday, April 5, at 7 p.m. The Riverhead High School Blue Masques present their spring musical. Price: $10 online (plus service fee), $12 at the door, $5 seniors.

"Rent" at St. Joseph's School (25 Church St., Ronkonkoma) on Friday, April 4, and Saturday, April 5, at 7 p.m. Enjoy the school edition of "Rent"; rated PG-13. Price: $15.

"From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler" at Van Nostrand Theatre (Suffolk Community College Crooked Hill Rd., Brentwood) on Saturday, April 5, at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Adapted from the novel by E.L. Konigsburg, the show invites the audience to join Claudia Kincaid and her brother Jamie on an adventure through the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Price: $8 adults and children, $7 seniors.

"A Year with Frog and Toad" at BroadHollow Theatre Company (700 Hempstead Tpke., Elmont) on Saturday, April 5, at 2 p.m. A musical based on the popular children's book about a cheerful frog and a grumpy toad. Price: $10 (in advance), $12 (at door).

"Garry Ferrar's Ah, Real Magic!" at BroadHollow's BayWay Arts Center (265 E. Main St., E. Islip) on Saturday, April 5, at 2 p.m. Kids and adults alike can enjoy a mix of comedy and magic. Price: $10 (in advance), $12 (at door).

Theaterworks USA: "Teacher From the Black Lagoon" at Landmark on Main Street (232 Main St., Port Washington) on Sunday, April 6, at 2 p.m. A music revue based on favorite contemporary children's books. Price: $18.

"Alice in Wonderland" at Ballet Long Island (1863 Pond Rd., Ronkonkoma) on Wednesday, April 9, at 11 a.m. and 12:15 p.m., and Saturday, April 12, at 1 p.m. A fairy tale ballet featuring Alice, Cheshire Cat, Mad Hatter, Queen of Hearts and more. Price: $16 adults, $8 children and seniors.

"101 Dalmatians" at BroadHollow's BayWay Arts Center (265 E. Main St., East Islip) on Saturdays in April, starting April 12 at 2 p.m. Cruella De Vil plots to steal Dalmatian puppies for her new fur coat. Price: $10 (in advance), $12 (at door).

"The Adventures of Peter Rabbit" at Coe Hall at Planting Fields Arboretum (1395 Planting Fields Rd., Oyster Bay) on Saturday, April 19, at 3 p.m. This classic tale will be presented by Theatre Three of Port Jefferson. Price: Free with $4 admission fee to Coe Hall; $8 parking fee.

"Make Your Own Musical (Family Show)" at The Suffolk Theater (118 E. Main St., Riverhead) on Saturday, April 26, at 2 p.m. An interactive improv musical where children are the stars. Based on kids' suggestions, Boston Underground Musical Project will create a full one-hour musical with original songs and on-stage participation from volunteers. Price: $25 adults, $15 children.

"The Adventures of Peter Rabbit" at Studio Theatre (141 S. Wellwood Ave., Lindenhurst) on Saturday, April 19, at 2 p.m. Follow Peter Rabbit, Benjamin and all of his friends in this live performance. Price: $10 (in advance), $12 (at door).
