Children love watching their favorite characters come to life onstage, and there's no shortage of theatrical events on Long Island.
Since many of the shows require some forethought, here's a sampling of family-friendly shows throughout March to help you plan a fun-filled day.
"Children's Cinema: Mary Poppins"
"The Clowns' Jack and the Beanstalk
The "Clowns' Jack and the Beanstalk" at Carriage House Theater, Vanderbilt Museum (180 Little Neck Rd., Centerport) is a children's comedy following a group of clowns who decide to present their own version of "Jack and the Beanstalk" on Saturdays and Sundays starting April 18 at 1 p.m., through May 17. "The Littlest Pirate"
Go see "The Littlest Pirate" at Theatre Three (412 Main St., Port Jefferson) on Saturdays at 11 a.m. starting April 18 through May 9. The children's musical follows a little girl who ships out with a silly bunch of inept pirates. Price: $10.
Enjoy a concert with the Imagination Movers
Kids can rock out with the Imagination Movers, stars of a Disney Junior TV Series for preschoolers at Landmark on Main Street (232 Main St., Port Washington) on Friday, April 10 at 7 p.m. Rich, Scott, Dave and Smitty will lead the audience through interactive dances and more; look out for confetti and giant balloons. Check out a production of "Mary Poppins"
Plaza Theatrical Productions' "Mary Poppins" will be performed at Bellmore Movies (222 Pettit Ave., Bellmore) on Friday, April 3 through Saturday, April 11 at 11 a.m. (excluding Sunday, April 5), as well as Sunday, April 12 at 1 p.m. The musical is set in Edwardian London and based on the series of books by P.L. Watch "Jim Henson's Dinosaur Train Live!"
On Saturday, April 11 at 2 p.m., families can check out "Jim Henson’s Dinosaur Train Live!" at Tilles Center (Route 25A, Brookville). The PBS Kids show comes to life with Buddy, Tiny, Don and all of their friends and family as they take a trip back in time to an age when dinosaurs roamed the Earth -- and rode trains. See a funny puppet show
On Monday, April 6 and Tuesday, April 7 at 2 p.m., check out "The Joshua Show" at the Long Island Children's Museum (11 Davis Ave., Garden City). Puppeteer Joshua Holden brings audiences a heartwarming story about friendship, confidence and the value of being yourself. When Mr. Nicholas, the sock puppet, makes an unnerving self-discovery, his friend Joshua teaches him to celebrate his differences. The puppet show features live music, comedy and tap dancing. "Ah, Real Magic!"
"Ah, Real Magic!" features magic and comic banter with magician Gary Ferrar. The show will take place at BroadHollow's BayWay Arts Center (265 E. Main St., East Islip) on Monday, April 6 and BroadHollow Theatre Company (700 Hempstead Tpke., Elmont) on Saturday, May 23 at 2 p.m. Price: $12, ($10 in advance).

Mo Willems' children's book comes to live on stage with the musical "Elephant & Piggie's We Are in a Play" at Smithtown Center for the Performing Arts (2 E. The fairy tale musical by Alan Menken, Howard Ashman and Tim Rice based on the 1991 Disney film "Beauty and the Beast" will be at BroadHollow's BayWay Arts Center (700 Hempstead Tpke., Elmont) on Thursday, April 9 at 1 p.m. The fairy tale is about an enchanted prince in the shape of a beast and a woman who must learn to love him if the curse on him is ever to be broken. Price: $12 ($10 advance).
Watch "Disney's Aladdin Jr." on stage
Spend the afternoon enjoying a musical with your family at CM Performing Arts Center (931 Montauk Hwy., Oakdale). "Disney's Aladdin Jr.," a comedy by Alan Menken, Howard Ashman and Tim Rice, adapted from the 1992 Disney animated film, will take place on Saturday, April 4 at 2 p.m.; Monday, April 6, Tuesday, April 7, Thursday, April 9 and Friday, April 10 at 2 p.m.; and Saturday, April 11 at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. The story is based on the ancient Arab folk tale of Aladdin and the magic lamp from "One Thousand and One Nights." A children's production adapted from characters created by Beatrix Potter, including Peter, Flopsy, Mopsy, Cotton-Tail, Benjamin Bunny and the McGregors. A children's production, based on the novel by Dodie Smith and the classic Disney movie, "101 Dalmatians," about what happens when a litter of Dalmatian puppies are abducted by the minions of Cruella De Vil, at The Stage Theater in Merrick (2222 Hewlett Ave., Merrick) on Saturdays at 2 p.m. through April 18.
