Children love watching their favorite characters come to life on stage, and there's no shortage of theatrical events on Long Island. Since many of the shows require some forethought, here's a sampling of family-friendly shows throughout March to help you plan a fun-filled day.

The Wizard of Oz at Bellmore Movies (222 Pettit Ave., Bellmore) on Saturdays in March at 11 a.m. and Sunday, March 30 at 1 p.m. Join Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tinman and the Cowardly in this hour-long performance, followed by a meet and greet with the cast. Price: $10.
Aesop's Fables at Long Island Children's Museum (11 Davis. Ave., Garden City) from Tuesday, March 11 to Friday, March 14 at 10 a.m. and noon, and Saturday, March 15 at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Children ages 3 and up can enjoy a live performance of Aesop's Fables by Mike Kenny. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland at Take-One Performing Arts Academy (1021 Portion Rd., Farmingville) on Sunday, March 2 at 1 p.m. A children's production about a girl who falls down a rabbit hole into a fantasy world, based on the book by Lewis Carroll. Price: $10.
Disney's Mulan Jr. at BroadHollow's BayWay Arts Center (265 E. Main St., East Islip) on Saturdays in March at 2 p.m. and Sunday, March 16 at noon. Travel back to ancient China with this adaptation of misfit Mulan and her mischievous sidekick Mushu. Price: $12, $10 (in advance).
Paper Bag Players: Hiccup Help! at Landmark on Main Street (232 Main St., Port Washington) on Sunday, March 9 at 2 p.m. Family-friendly performances including three classic numbers: "Cookies," "Bicycle Race" and "A Perfect Picture." Price: $18.
The Wizard of Oz at Studio Theatre (141 S. Wellwood Ave., Lindenhurst) on Saturdays in March at 2 p.m. Join Dorothy, Toto and the rest of the gang as they journey down the yellow brick road to Oz. Price: $12, $10 (in advance).
Not Just for Kids: Alex the Jester at Staller Center for the Arts (Stony Brook University, Nicolls Road, Stony Brook) on Sunday, March 16 at 4 p.m. Join the "court jester" for medieval traditions of fun and foolery through body language and the gibberish language of Grammelot. Price: $15.
Michael Cooper: Masked Marvels & Wondertales at Van Nostrand Theatre at Suffolk County Community College (Crooked Hill Road, Brentwood) on Saturday, March 15 at 3 p.m. Families will enjoy tales of thrilling adventures and silly antics such as dogs wearing hats, a giant nose that sneezes and more. The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Other Eric Carle Favorites at Tilles Center (Route 25A, Brookville) on Saturday, March 29 at 2 p.m. Three performances for children ages 3 and up include "The Very Hungry Caterpillar," "Little Cloud" and "The Mixed-Up Chameleon." Price: $15-$23.
Hercules at BroadHollow Theatre Company (700 Hempstead Tpke., Elmont) on Sunday, March 2 at noon. This live performance of fun and fantasy is inspired by the mythological Greek hero known for his strength and adventures. Price: $12, $10 (in advance).
Disney's Beauty and the Beast Jr. at Smithtown Center for the Performing Arts (2 E. Main St.) on Saturdays in March at 1 p.m., Sunday, March 2 at 2 p.m., Sunday, March 9 at 11 a.m., Sunday, March 16 at 11 a.m., Wednesday, March 19 at 2 p.m., Sunday, March 23 at 11 a.m. and Sunday, March 30 at 11 a.m. This musical based on the 1991 Disney film of the same name follows Belle who must learn to love an enchanted prince trapped in the body of a beast. The Phantom of the Opera at Bay Shore Senior Hight School (155 3rd Ave., Bay Shore) on Thursday, March 13; Friday, March 14; and Saturday, March 15 from 7-10 p.m. The high school drama club performs this classic Broadway show. Price: $15.
Snow White at Ballet Long Island (1863 Pond Rd., Ronkonkoma) on Wednesday, March 12 at 11 a.m. and 12:15 p.m., and Saturday, March 15 at 1 p.m. Families can enjoy a ballet performance of this classic fairy tale. Price: $16 adults, $8 children.
