Children love watching their favorite characters come to life onstage, and there's no shortage of theatrical events on Long Island. Since many of the shows require some forethought, here's a sampling of family-friendly shows throughout November to help you plan a fun-filled day.
"Disney's Beauty and the Beast" at CM Performing Arts Center (931 Montauk Hwy., Oakdale) on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 11 a.m. Musical fairy tale based on the 1991 Disney film, telling the tale of an enchanted prince in the shape of a hideous beast and the intelligent woman who enters his life and must learn to love him if the curse is ever to be broken. Price: $12.
"Mike Super: Magic and Illusion" at Staller Center for the Arts (Stony Brook University, Nicolls Road, Stony Brook) on Sunday, Nov. 9 at 4 p.m. A murder-mystery adventure reminiscent of the game of "Clue" with illusion and magic. Price: $15.
"Family Concert: Brett Band for Kids" at Sid Jacobson JCC (300 Forest Dr., East Hills) on Sunday, Nov. 9 at 11 a.m. Families can enjoy original children's songs along with classics. Price: $30 per family.
"Disney on Ice: Frozen" at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum (1255 Hempstead Tpke., Uniondale) on Tuesday, Nov. 4 through Thursday, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m.; Friday, Nov. 7 at 3:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.; Saturday, Nov. 8 at 11 a.m., 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.; Sunday, Nov. 9 at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Kids' favorite royal sisters are appearing on ice, along with Olaf and more. Price: $25-$250.
"The Science of Magic" at Van Nostrand Theatre Suffolk County Community College (Crooked Hill Road, Brentwood) on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 2 p.m. Magic illusions with Mr. Snide and his alter ego, Dr. Heckle, who performs the same feats using tools of modern technology while explaining laws of physics. Price: $8.
"Songs in the Key of Earth" at Vanderbilt Museum and Planetarium (180 Little Neck Rd., Centerport) on Sunday, Nov. 16 at 6 p.m. A family concert (musical rocket ship ride through space) with singer-songwriter Patricia Shih and sidekick Stephen Fricker. Price: $8.
"Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" at BroadHollow Theatre Company at Studio Theatre (141 S. Wellwood Ave., Lindenhurst) on Friday, Nov. 22 at 2 p.m., Friday, Nov. 28 at 1 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 29 at 2 p.m. A classic story of this youthful reindeer with an unusual luminous red nose. Price: $12.
"Robot Planet's 'The Intergalactic Nemesis' Live-Action Graphic Novel" at Tilles Center (Route 25A, Brookville) on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 4 p.m. Book One: "Target Earth," a period-sci-fi-horror-suspense comedy with live music, voice-actors, a Foley artist and comic book images. Price: $14-$46.
"A Christmas Story" at John W. Engeman Theater (250 Main St., Northport) on Thursday, Nov. 20 at 8 p.m., Friday, Nov. 21 at 8 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 22 at 3 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 23 at 2 p.m., Friday, Nov. 28 at 3 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 29 at 3 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 30 at 3 p.m. A musical set in 1940s Indiana and based on stories by radio humorist Jean Shepherd, and on the classic 1983 movie about a bespectacled boy named Ralphie who has a big imagination and one wish for Christmas. Price: $69.
"Theatreworks USA: Fly Guy & Other Stories" at Landmark on Main Street (232 Main St., Port Washington) on Sunday, Nov. 23 at 2 p.m. A musical revue based on favorite children's books ("Paper Bag Princess," "Diary of a Worm" and "Lilly's Big Day"). Price: $18.
"Barnaby Saves Christmas" at Theatre Three (412 Main St., Port Jefferson) on Friday, Nov. 28 and Saturday, Nov. 29 at 11 a.m. As the littlest elf and his reindeer friend set off on a journey to save Christmas, they meet some new friends along the way and learn the true meaning of the holiday season. Price: $10.
"Mooseltoe" at Gateway Playhouse (215 South Country Rd., Bellport) on Tuesday, Nov. 25 at 10 a.m., Friday, Nov. 28 at noon and 2:30 p.m. A children's musical about a moose who wants to fly with Santa's reindeer; celebrities from Broadway, TV and the movies provide the voices. Price: $15-$25.
"Annie Jr." at BroadHollow Theatre Company (700 Hempstead Tpke., Elmont) on Saturday, Nov. 29 at 4 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 30 at 2:30 p.m. A musical based on Harold Gray comic strip "Little Orphan Annie." Price: $12 ($10 in advance).
"Frosty" at John W. Engeman Theater (250 Main St., Northport) on Saturday, Nov. 29 at 11 a.m. and Sunday, Nov. 30 at 10:30 a.m., through Jan. 4. A children's production featuring a snowman who is magically brought to life when a group of children place a top hat on his head. Price: $15.
"A Merry Mini Nutcracker" at Brookside School (1260 Meadowbrook Rd., North Merrick) on Sunday, Nov. 30 at noon and 5 p.m. A shortened, child-friendly version of the holiday classic "The Nutcracker." Price: $20.
