Family-friendly performances on Long Island in October

Children love watching their favorite characters come to life on stage, and there's no shortage of theatrical events on Long Island. Since many of the shows require some forethought, here's a sampling of family-friendly shows throughout October to help you plan a fun-filled day.

"The Wizard of Oz" at John W. Engeman Theater (250 Main St., Northport) weekly Saturdays at 11 a.m. and Sundays at 10:30 a.m., through Nov. 2. Musical extravaganza based on “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” by L. Frank Baum, in which a young girl is swept away by a tornado to a magical land, where she embarks on a quest to see the Wizard, who can help her return home. Price: $15.

"The Wiggles: Ready, Steady, Wiggle! Tour" at NYCB Theatre at Westbury (960 Brush Hollow Rd., Westbury) on Sunday, Oct. 5, at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. The Wiggles will perform their "Ready, Steady Wiggle" tour. Prices start at $22.50.

"Snoopy" at Nassau Community College (1 Education Dr., Garden City) on Saturday, Oct. 11, and Sunday, Oct. 12, at 2 p.m.; Friday, Oct. 17, at 7 p.m.; and Saturday, Oct. 18, and Sunday, Oct. 19, at 2 p.m. Children's theater work based on the "Peanuts" character created by Charles M. Schulz. Price: $9, $6 ages 12 and younger.

Bari Koral Family Rock Band at Landmark on Main Street (232 Main St., Port Washington) on Sunday, Oct. 19, at 2 p.m. Get up and dance show for kids and their parents. Price: $18.

"The Not-So-Spooky Halloween Spooktacular" at Landmark on Main Street (232 Main St., Port Washington) on Sunday, Oct. 12, at 11 a.m. A Halloween variety show (puppetry, magic, live action, comedy, surprises), with magical wizard Mr. E. and sorcerer Old McDonagal. Kids are welcome in a costume. Price: $15.

Dance Visions NY presents Colorsong at the Long Island Children's Museum (11 Davis Ave., Garden City) on Monday, Oct. 13 at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Features Paul Joseph playing his piano preceded by family art workshops; recommended for kids ages 3 and up. Price: $10 theater only.

"Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" at Theatre Three (412 Main St., Port Jefferson) on Saturdays starting Oct. 11 at 11 a.m., and Sunday, Oct. 19, at 3 p.m. A hilarious twist on this classic fairy tale involving a pursued princess, a jealous queen, seven daffy dwarfs and Prince Charming. Price: $10.

"Disney's Beauty and the Beast" at CM Performing Arts Center (931 Montauk Hwy., Oakdale) on Saturday, Oct. 18, at 2 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 25, at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Musical fairy tale based on the 1991 Disney film, telling the tale of an enchanted prince in the shape of a hideous beast and the intelligent woman who enters his life and must learn to love him if the curse is ever to be broken. Price: $12.

"The Wizard of Oz" at NYCB Theatre at Westbury (960 Brush Hollow Rd., Westbury) on Saturday, Oct. 18, at 11 a.m. A live performance of this family-friendly classic film. Price: $14.50.

"The Magic Garden with Carole & Paula" at YMCA Boulton Center for the Performing Arts (37 W. Main St., Bay Shore) on Sunday, Oct. 19, at 1 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Family concert (video clips, songs and stories, antics provided by the original Sherlock and more from the locally produced children's television show of the 1970s and '80s). Price: $20, $15 children.

"The Not-So-Spooky Halloween Spooktacular" at Vail-Leavitt Music Hall (18 Peconic Ave., Riverhead) on Sunday, Oct. 19, at 11 a.m. A Halloween variety show (puppetry, magic, live action, comedy, surprises), with magical wizard Mr. E. and sorcerer Old McDonagal; kids are welcome to come in costume. Price: $15.

"Boo! A Monster Musical" at Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts (71 E. Main St., Patchogue) on Sunday, Oct. 26, at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Families can enjoy the interactive concert for kids in which an 11-year-old boy attempts to stop the World Holiday Commission from canceling Halloween, performed by The New Musicals Project. Price: $10.
