Family-friendly performances on Long Island in September

"Sesame Street Live: Let's Dance" will be at Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale on Friday, Sept. 26-Sunday, Sept. 28, 2014.

Children love watching their favorite characters come to life on stage, and there's no shortage of theatrical events on Long Island. Since many of the shows require some forethought, here's a sampling of family-friendly shows throughout September to help you plan a fun-filled day.

"Winnie the Pooh" at the Long Island Children's Museum (11 Davis Ave., Garden City) on Saturday, Sept. 20 and 27, at 11:30 a.m. and Sunday, Sept. 21 and 28, at 11:30 a.m. The  Plaza Theatrical Production is based on the adventures of the fictional anthropomorphic bear created by A.A. Milne. Price: $12.

"Sesame Street Live: Let's Dance" at Nassau Coliseum (1255 Hempstead Tpke., Uniondale) on Friday, Sept. 26, 10:30 a.m. and 3 p.m.; Saturday, Sept. 27, at 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 28, at 2 p.m. Join all your favorite "Sesame Street" characters in this interactive, live performance. Elmo uses his imagination to "Do the Robot," Cookie teaches all "feets" to dance and Ernie shares the fun of dance with "Shake Your Head One Time." Price: $22-$58.

"The Wizard of Oz" at John W. Engeman Theater (250 Main St., Northport) weekly Saturdays at 11 a.m. and Sundays at 10:30 a.m., starting Saturday, Sept. 27. Musical extravaganza based on “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” by L. Frank Baum, in which a young girl is swept away by a tornado to a magical land where she embarks on a quest to see the Wizard who can help her return home. Price: $15.

"Cinema for Kids: My Little Pony Equestrian Girls — Rainbow Rocks" at Cinema Arts Centre (423 Park Ave., Huntington) on Sunday, Sept. 28, at noon. Canterlot High is hosting a musical showcase and Rainbow Dash, Applejack, Pinkie Pie, Rarity and Fluttershy are going to be performing with their new band, The Rainbooms. But when a new girl group, The Dazzlings, arrives at CHS, they convince everyone to turn the friendly showcase into a Battle of the Bands.
