Free (and cheap!) ideas for kids on Long Island in June

Need weekend plans or something to do with the kids during the week? There are a ton of free children's events at local libraries, but we also found free and cheap ($5 or less) things to do elsewhere this month. Whether you have one, two, three or more kids in tow, here's a roundup of fun, budget-friendly events in June.

Arts in the Plaza at the Kennedy Plaza (Park Avenue, Long Beach) on Saturdays in June (through 10/26) from 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. This weekly event features photography, jewelry, paintings and more on display, plus a kids art station from 10 a.m.- noon. Live music is from 1 p.m.-4 p.m.

Family Picnic in the Park at Harborfront Park  (101-A East Broadway, Port Jefferson) on Saturday, June 8 at noon. Bring your own picnic lunch and blanket and enjoy face painting, cotton candy, children's games, balloon artists, ice cream, performances and more. There's also an evening outdoor showing of "Mary Poppins." Rain date: June 9.

Farm Days at Talmage Farm Agway (1122 Osborne Ave., Riverhead) on Saturday, June 8 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Kids can learn to milk a (wooden) cow, enjoy pony rides and get a chance to meet calves, llamas, baby goats, lambs, piglets, chicks, ducks and more.

Wag n' Wheels at Smithtown Toyota (330 East Jericho Tpke., Smithtown) on Saturday, June 8 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Check out pie eating contests, carnival games, raffles, food, entertainment and more. Pets are welcome; hosted by the Long Island chapter of Canine Companions for Independence.

Caroline Country Fair at Caroline Church of Brookhaven (1 Dyke Rd., Setauket) on Saturday, June 8 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. With more than 30 vendors, kids and adults alike can check out children's games, races, pony rides, a fire truck visit, live music, a barbecue lunch and bake sale. Rain date: June 9 at noon.

Port Jefferson Green Fest at Port Jefferson Village Center (101A E. Broadway, Port Jefferson) on Saturday, June 15 from 1-6 p.m. Learn about the latest "green" solutions with eco-friendly vendors, children's activities, live music and more.

Wildlife and Craft Fair at Sweetbriar Nature Center (62 Eckernkamp Dr., Smithtown) on Saturday, June 8 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Adults will enjoy the craft vendors while children can have fun with games, face painting, animal shows and a falconry demonstration with live birds of pray and wolves. Price: $10 per family.

Father's Day — Make Dad a Special Gift at Rogers Mansion (17 Meeting House Lane, Southampton on Saturday, June 8 at 10 a.m. Make a homemade gift for dad; recommended for ages 7-12. Price: $5; must register.

Stories of the Spring Sky at Gov. Alfred E. Smith/Sunken Meadow State Park (at the end of the Sunken Meadow Parkway, Kings Park) on Saturday, June 8 at 8 p.m. Enjoy stories of the constellations and learn how they help us navigate the spring sky. Make sure you bring binoculars; reservations are required. Price: $4, $3, free children ages 3 and younger.

Butterfly Flutterbys at Caumsett State Historic Park Preserve (25 Lloyd Harbor Rd., Lloyd Harbor) on Sunday, June 9 from 1:30-3 p.m. Kids ages 5 and up can discover the life of a butterfly. Nets, books and temporary cages will be loaned; must reserve. Price: $4, $3, free children ages 3 and younger.

Tiny Tots: Let's Discover Nature Hour at Caleb Smith State Park Preserve (Jericho Turnpike, Smithtown) on Thursday, June 13 and June 27 at 10 a.m. Parents and children can discover nature together with hands-on activities. Recommended for kids ages 3-5; reservations are required. Price: $4 adults, $3 children; parking fee may apply.

Family Bingo Night at Country Fair Entertainment (3351 Rte. 112, Medford) on Saturday, June 15 from 6-9 p.m. Challenge your family to a game of Bingo; registration is required. Price: $6.

Jr. Angler Freshwater "Catch and Release" Fishing Tournament at Caleb Smith State Park Preserve (Jericho Turnpike, Smithtown) on Saturday, June 15 from 9-11 a.m. and 1-3 p.m. Kids ages 5-8 can test their fishing skills in the early session and ages 9-12 in the afternoon; reservations are required. Price: $4 adults, $3 children; parking fee may apply.

Family Adventures: Interesting Insects at Hempstead Lake State Park (Southern State Parkway, West Hempstead) on Sunday, June 16 at 1:30 p.m. Take a walk in the woods and uncover insects and more; reservations are required. Price: $4, $3, free for children ages 3 and younger.

Moonlight Hike at Bayard Cutting Arboretum (440 Montauk Hwy., Great River) on Friday, June 21 from 7:30-9:30 p.m. Kids and adults can take an evening hike through the Arboretum. Reservations are required. Price: $4, $3, free for children ages 3 and younger.

Children's Summer Performance: Magic of Amore at Hempstead Lake State Park (Southern State Parkway, West Hempstead) on Saturday, June 22 at 2 p.m. Head to the park and enjoy an interactive performance by LI magician, Magic of Amore. Don't forget chairs or a blanket. The event is free; $8 parking fee.

Solstice Celebration at the Long Island Science Center (11 W. Main St., Riverhead). Learn about the seasons and why the days get longer and shorter. Price: $5.

Turtles, Snakes and Frogs, Oh My at Connetquot River State Park Preserve (Sunrise Highway, Oakdale) on Sunday, June 23 at 1:30 p.m. Get up close and personal with turtles, snakes and frogs, then hike to explore these creatures. Reservations are required. Price: $4, $3 children, free ages 3 and younger.

Firefly Fun at Connetquot River State Park Preserve (Sunrise Highway, Oakdale) on Friday, June 28 from 7:30-9:30 p.m. Learn about fireflies through indoor activities, followed by a short walk. Recommended for kids ages 3 and older. Price: $4, $3 children, free ages 3 and younger; reservations are required.

Family Adventures: Butterfly Safari at Caleb Smith State Park Preserve (Jericho Turnpike, Smithtown) on Saturday, June 29 at 1:30 p.m. Make a craft as you learn about a butterfly's life. Then, explore the butterfly garden. Recommended for children 5 and older; reservations are required. Price: $4 adults, $3 children; parking fee may apply.

Nature Photography for Children at Connetquot River State Park Preserve (Sunrise Highway, Oakdale) on Saturday, June 29 at 10 a.m. Take pictures as you walk through the park. Price: $4, $3 children, free ages 3 and younger; must reserve.
