Sculpture Art Caper and Exploration Activity Backpack at Hofstra University's Emily Lowe Gallery (Hempstead Turnpike, Hempstead) running weekly throughout the year starting Wednesday, Jan. 1 through Sunday, Dec. 21. Times vary. Pick up a backpack and solve an Art Caper mystery by unraveling clues found while exploring the outdoor sculpture collection. Appropriate for children ages 5 to 10.
Mommy and Me at Chai Center (501 Vanderbilt Pkwy., Dix Hills) starting Tuesday, Jan. 7 through Tuesday, March 25 from 9:45 to 11 a.m. Stretch, sing, dance and bond with your child. Appropriate for children from 6 to 24 months.
Celebrate the New Year at Maritime Explorium (101 E. Broadway, Port Jefferson) starting Wednesday, Jan.1 through Sunday, Jan. 5 from 1 to 5 p.m. Kids can learn about geometry and design their own Times Square Ball. Price: $5.
Northern Spur Train and Swap Meet at Knights of Columbus (400 S. Broadway, Lindenhurst) on Sunday, Jan. 5 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Perfect for little car and train lovers, this event features tons of model cars, railroad equipment and more. Price: $4, children younger than 16 free with one paid admission.
Celestial Celebration at Long Island Science Center on Saturday, Jan. 11 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Kids can learn the phases of the moon, make a moon chart and participate in other space-themed activites. Price: $5.
