Grace Music School is launching a children’s piano competition featuring classical works from the 2001 album “Fantasies & Delusions,” which was composed by Billy Joel and performed by pianist Richard Joo.
The competition will take place April 1-2. The winner will receive a $1,000 prize and perform at the school’s Carnegie Hall concert in Manhattan on June 2.
“I hope this competition will spotlight these lesser-known but incredible compositions so they become part of the repertoire young pianists are taught,” director Grace Heaphy says.
Children ages 13 to 18 can sign up for the competition during the grand opening celebration of Grace Music School’s second location, at Steinway & Sons, 505 Walt Whitman Rd., Melville. The event, which is open to the public, takes place Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. The celebration features student performances, door prizes, an opportunity to win six months of free piano lessons, along with a free piano rental, free 30-minute trial lessons and refreshments, Heaphy says.
Grace Music School offers lessons in piano, strings, voice, guitar, percussion and woodwinds. Its Fort Salonga location trains about 400 musicians each week.
