Today marks National Adoption Day, an effort to raise awareness of the more than 100,000 children in foster care waiting to find permanent, loving families.

In total, National Adoption Day helped nearly 40,000 children move from foster care to a forever family and this year, it's expected that 4,500 children will be adopted today.

Many celebrities, from the Jolie-Pitt family and Madonna to Sandra Bullock, Hugh Jackman and more, have chosen to adopt children.

Back in September, the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute (CCAI) honored actress Katherine Heigl and her singer-songwriter husband, Josh Kelley, as the 2012 National Angels in Adoption for their dedication and commitment to adoption and foster care issues. R&B artist Ne-Yo and People magazine were also recognized.

Even before they were married, Heigl and Kelley had agreed on the importance of adoption in their future family, according to a news release issued by the CCAI. Heigl has spoken often of her strong feelings about the issue, as her sister was adopted from Korea. Two years after their wedding, Heigl and Kelley adopted their daughter, Naleigh, from South Korea when she was 10 months old. Kelley also wrote the song “Naleigh Moon” for her and Heigl produced the song's music video. The couple recently adopted their second daughter, Adalaide, from Louisiana this past spring.

“Adoption has always been a part of my life and my family,” Heigl said. “Josh and I are hopeful this recognition will help raise awareness of the millions of children worldwide who are without families. People often say, ‘Your daughters are so lucky that you adopted them.' That sentiment has never sat well with us. It doesn’t seem to fit right because the truth is we’re so lucky for these kids.”
