Although the weather outside is still frightful, it doesn't mean we can't start planning for the spring season. And there's no better way to get into the spirit than with the flower and garden shows on Long Island that kick off this weekend.

The good news is, while you're checking out the flowers and collecting gardening tips, your kids will have a blast with all of the family-friendly activities. Here are a few workshops for kids happening this weekend and over the next few weeks:

Dees' Nursery Flower and Garden Show (69 Atlantic Ave., Oceanside) on March 8-16. Family activities will take place on the weekends (March 8, 9, 15 and 16) with free events like a wildlife scavenger hunt, wildlife mask or design a beehive craft along with shamrock planting, during which kids can decorate a lucky pot, plant seeds and bring them home to watch them grow. Additionally, children can create their own terrarium and listen to a wildlife story on Sunday, March 9 and 16 at noon for $15. For more information, visit deesnursery.com.

The 2014 Spring Flower and Garden Show at Hicks Nurseries (100 Jericho Tpke., Westbury) on March 7-23. Children ages 12 and younger can plant their own pea seed on Saturdays or Sundays from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., let it sprout indoors and then plant it outdoors. On Mondays-Fridays from 3-6 p.m., kids can explore the gardens and search for unique plants and garden ornaments during a scavenger hunt; recommended for ages 7-12. On March 11-13 from 4-5 p.m., children can create a bird feeder using a recycled bottle, bird seed and decorative craft items. There is a $5 fee; registration is required.
