Kidsday: Beach sports

The amazing sound of waves crashing, the smell of suntan lotion, sand between our toes and the warm sun beating on our sunglasses, the beach is the best way to get out, be active and have fun during the summer. Most everyone loves the beach. There are so many activities that you can participate in on the beach, whether it is just sunbathing or playing sports.

Did you ever wonder what the most popular beach sport is? Well, we did. We surveyed 100 seventh-graders and asked them choose their favorite beach sport from the following choices: volleyball, swimming, Frisbee, sand soccer and boogie boarding. Surprisingly, swimming got the most votes with 38. Boogie boarding came in second with 24 votes, while volleyball had 22, sand soccer got 11 and Frisbee had only 5 votes. Kids love to swim and it is even more exciting in the ocean with waves crashing on you.

Whatever you choose to do at the beach can be fun and active.

Book review: 'Two Truths and a Lie'

"Two Truths and a Lie," the sequel to "The Lying Game" by Sara Shepard (Harper Teen), is an interesting and suspenseful novel. It tells the story of identical twin sisters who were unknowingly separated at birth. They accidentally find each other online. Emma, a down-to-earth girl living a happy and normal life with her foster family, is compelled to meet her twin, Sutton. Sutton meanwhile has been living the life of the rich and popular, full of friends, parties and boyfriends. That is until Sutton is mysteriously murdered. It is up to Emma to find out who killed her sister and why.

I recommend it to kids 13 and older who like realistic fiction and suspenseful stories that keep you on the edge of your seat.
