We met singer and actress Selena Gomez in her dressing room at the “Today Show” in Manhattan recently.
Is your personality similar to Alex is on “Wizards of Waverly Place”?
Sometimes. I don’t get into as much trouble as Alex gets into. My mom would never allow that. I like that she’s very confident and she doesn’t take no for an answer. So feel like that’s something we have in common.
What is your favorite thing about your character, Alex?
My favorite thing about Alex is that she’s very different than any other character on Disney. She’s kind of sarcastic and she’s kind of sassy and I really like that about her. So she’s very different and I admire her style as well. She’s kind of cool clothes that I get to wear a lot too.
What was it like making the “Wizards of Waverly Place” movie?
The movie was completely different than the show. It was really fun. We got to shoot it in Puerto Rico. So got to shoot it on the beach and we had a lot of special effects that was involved and it was really fun to be able to kind of step out of the shell.
Do you miss your family when you’re travel?
A lot. Yes. I love my family very much. It was very hard to be away from them whenever I do projects or tours. So I have a little ichat camera and I get to talk to my family like that. My grandmother has an ichat. I could talk to her on ichat. There are ways to stay in touch with your family.
Do you ever wish you could lead a regular teenage life?
I feel like I have the best of both. I’m very happy because my parents brought me up to be able to run around and hang out with my friends. But at the same time I get to live out my dreams and I get to live a life that I’m very fortunate to have.
Besides the drums, what other instruments do you play?
I love piano. I play piano a lot.
How has fame changed your life?
Well it changed it in a good and bad way. In the good way because I get to meet wonderful fans like you guys. And I get to go out and tour and do what I love to do. And at the same time it’s kind of unfortunate when other people want to know your personal life and they get really involved in that and they try to change it and it’s kind of difficult sometimes and then you don’t know who to trust. But other than that I’m enjoying it and I have really good fans and family.
What inspired you to write the song “Naturally”?
I actually didn’t write “Naturally.” It was a song that I picked out, and to be honest, it wasn’t even supposed to be on the record. So it was a last minute thing and we were trying to pick out a different song to put in its place, but I’m really glad it made the record because it’s one of my fans favorites and it’s a great song for me to perform.
Did you make any choices in your career that you regret now?
No. When you live with no regrets, everything happens for a reason. So even when you’re having the worse day possible there’s a reason that you’re having that day. For me everything that I’ve done in my career I’m very blessed in what I’ve done.
When did you know you wanted to become an actress?
I was nine. I was two years younger than you. I always put on plays and I would sing for my family, to my stuffed animals and I’d sing in front of the mirror. And I always wanted to entertain people. So I feel like I started at a very young age and I asked my mom if I could try it out. And she supported me. And years later here I am.
Can you describe what your perfect outfit will look like?
Well it depends. I love clothes a lot. But my favorite outfit would probably be boots because I obsessed with boots and maybe a cute scarf.
Do you have an iPod and if so, what kind of music do you listen to on it?
Of course I have an iPod! I love music. I have lots of music. I have country music, I have pop and I have classical music. I have all kinds of music that I love to listen to.
Do you play any sports?
I do. I like to play tennis and I like to play golf. And I like to play basketball, but horribly. Not good at basketball. But I love being active and I love hanging out with my friends.
How do you make the special effects on your show?
A lot of it is green screen. You have to stand in front of this green screen that they have and I have to talk to like a piece of tape sometimes so that they can superimpose it later and then add all the digital effects later. A lot of it is kind of difficult and weird, but it looks great once it’s done shooting.
Did you ever play Wii Fit?
No I’m horrible at it. I did play bowling and I tried boxing, but I literally was in pain because it was so hard for me to kneel.
How do you remember all the lines when you are acting?
Memorizing lines for me is really easy fortunately. And people when they ask me if it’s hard it’s like you memorize a song and you kind of have it stuck in your head. I feel like that’s the script and the lines are the music. I just listen to a song and kind of make it my own and read the lines and have it memorized.
Who is your favorite actor to work with?
My favorite actor so far that I’ve worked with would have be to Joey King, she plays my little sister in a movie called Ramona and Beezus that comes out this summer. She is 10 years old and she was just the sweetest girl. I don’t have any siblings, so I don’t know what it’s like to have a little sister. So it was a good experience working with her.
