Kidsday: Pre-game fun at the Meadowlands

Sunday afternoons and football: What could be better? Well, if you are a kid who is lucky enough to get a ticket to a home game, you now have a whole new reason to get excited about football. Who would have guessed that the pre-game activities could be just as much fun as the game itself?

This was made clear to me on a beautiful fall Sunday afternoon at the New Meadowlands Stadium. Kids everywhere enjoyed the great festivities set up for Jets fans.

Sponsored by MetLife, these activities provided fun, entertainment and spirit to all the kids in attendance. The fantastic games, interviews and all-around fun were only half of the amazing experience.

The game itself was a big leap from how it appears on TV. The colors jump out at you, the action is even more intense, and you really understand why people are devoted to their teams.
As I arrived by train to the stadium, I caught my first glimpse of the amazing structure. The closer we got to the game, the more excited I felt. Finally, we arrived and I got down to business. I tried to figure out where all the commotion was coming from, and I realized it was the screams of delight from the younger Jets fans who were enjoying the Halloween festivities created by MetLife. Dressed up in costumes, they participated in offerings at all the different kid-friendly booths, such as face painting, hours before the game.

Kids can enter the gates as early as 10 a.m. A costume contest was held and the winner was brought to the field during half time! Snoopy and the gang made a guest appearance, posing for pictures with excited fans.

A really interesting idea created by the MetLife crew was the Countdown Card, which anyone could sign up for, allowing them to be involved in all sorts of fun events, ranging from getting an autograph from former players to winning prizes such as field passes and tickets to games. I had the opportunity to speak with and get an autograph from the weekly guest, former Jets quarterback Glenn Foley. Every week great players from the past will come back to their home field to sign autographs.

Other fun activities will be unveiled for future games, and, if my experience was any indication, I can’t wait to see what they have planned!

After my encounter with famous former players, I made my way through the bustling crowd toward our seats.

What if you are Giants fan? MetLife also sponsors kids’ activities for fans of the New York Giants.
