We went to the premiere of the new animated movie “Puss in Boots” at Hearst Tower in Manhattan on Monday, and we also interviewed one of the main characters, Salma Hayak, who does the voice of Kitty Softpaws. This strong and independent feline completes the trio of Puss in Boots and Humpty Dumpty.

This five-smile, must-see movie, is complete with fairytale humor and 3-D graphics that make you feel like Kitty Softpaws and Puss in Boots are actually dancing their way into your heart! There are also a variety of other characters including Humpty Dumpty, Jack and Jill, Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Boy Blue and so many more! We loved the exciting twist that turned two wholesome fairytale characters into murderous outlaws.

This is a great story of Puss in Boots’ life, and how he overcomes betrayal to find friendship. This movie must have taken a lot of time to make because its plot is well thought out. We have to give props to Antonio Banderas (Puss), Salma Hayek, Zach Galifianakis (Mr. Dumpty), Billy Bob Thornton (Jack) and Amy Sedaris (Jill) for a wonderful movie! Be a part of the sword fighting and boot stomping fun and see this film as soon as you can.

After standing on the red carpet, Salma came over and talked to us! We asked her:

Was your daughter, Valentina, excited to hear that you were playing Kitty Softpaws?

Yes! I didn’t tell her the beginning. I was just doing it sort of behind her back. And then one day we went to the movies here and without me knowing there was a preview of the film and I got all nervous because I hadn’t told her and then Kitty Softpaws came on and she said, “Oh mommy this cat sounds just like you.” And that’s when I had to explain to her what I was doing.

Did you like playing this character?

Well, honestly there’s some parts that I didn’t like, but I think if I tell you what they were it’s like a betrayal. Let’s just be happy that there were some that I liked and I definitely love this cat. This is one of my favorite ones.

You have just been recently recognized as a stylish celebrity. Can we expect to see Kitty Softpaws on any top 10 dressed lists?

I think that they could have given her more props to look great with. Valentina complains how come she doesn’t have a hat. So I wish she had more things. On the other hand, I am glad she doesn’t because she’s fabulous without having to be stylish. And I think that’s an important message for the kids out there.

Does Kitty Softpaws relate to your personality?

A little bit. I think that I am pretty independent and I can stand my own ground if some cat tried to think that he’s better than me. Get those beans. I can get my own beans. Thank you very much.

Does your character remind you of someone in your family or a friend of yours?

I don’t have a lot of thieves in my family. But I must say that when you’re doing the character there is a camera that’s filming you and they take all the mannerisms you use and your facial expressions... and that’s how they do the drawings. When I saw the film instead of seeing faces or little attitudes that I had thought I would see Valentina, but I’m sure that Valentina is copying it from me. I just don’t know that I’m doing it. She reminds me of Valentina.

On an average how many movies scripts do you read in a year?

On an average, sometimes you can get a lot of bad ones and you don’t do any of them. And sometimes you don’t get any movies and then you just get one and it’s a great movie so you do it. Because I had my child, I didn’t want to work so much. On an average I don’t have like a system. I’m a little bit more of a kind of a go with the flow kind of a person.

How do you remember the lines in a script?

I’m the only person that I know who reads the script once and remember everything in it. I sometimes go scene by scene and memorize it on the day, but I can analyze that scene, know exactly what happens, where, what is the character psychology and all that in one read. It takes me longer to read it but I read it very thoroughly.

Having a job like yours you must get a lot of negative feedback. What do you say to the people?

I’m very lucky I have not got so much negative feedback. I’m one of those very, very lucky people, but the truth is I don’t really read a lot of the feedback. So maybe I’ve had a lot of bad feedback and just nobody tells me about it. I don’t know so I don’t have to worry about it. I think that we’re pretty lucky.
