Adopting a pet on Long Island

In January, my family was blessed with a new family member -- our dog, Henry. Adopting Henry was not an easy or short process. We had gotten permission to adopt Henry for Christmas, but it took about a month to find the right dog to meet our needs.

We found the perfect dog for us at the Oyster Bay Animal Shelter in Syosset. The people there were extremely compassionate to both animals and humans alike. Our particular dog, Henry, is a pit bull mix who had been in the shelter for over a year, found as a stray. Now he is my family's beloved dog. Henry enjoys dog parks, sunny spots and cuddles from his family.

My family might have found our perfect pup at the Oyster Bay Animal Shelter, but we met many other phenomenal dogs in other shelters across the Island. A few shelters I suggest for great pets are Last Hope Animal Rescue in Wantagh, North Shore Animal League in Port Washington, and Little Shelter Animal Rescue in Huntington.

All the shelters I have mentioned also have cats up for adoption, except for Oyster Bay Animal Shelter. Whether you are a cat person or a dog lover, adopted pets of any species make great family members and forever friends.
