One of my Kidsday articles that was published in Newsday this summer was about me being the Ultimate Mets Fan. I wrote about how I like to follow the New York Mets, and even visit other stadiums to see them play. I have season tickets and lots and lots of Mets memorabilia.
The Mets read my article and invited me to go on Citi Field and watch them take batting practice and meet some of the players. I was so excited about this, but I did have a little bit of bad luck the day before. I broke my wrist! This made me very sad, but the silver lining was that they could all sign my cast.
The first player who came to speak to me was my favorite player — Mets catcher Kevin Plawecki. We talked about what happened to me and about his newborn baby. Jerry Blevins is so friendly — he asked, “What did you do to your wrist?” A total of 16 players and coaches signed my cast including Wilmer Flores, Jerry Blevins, Austin Jackson, Mickey Callaway, Ruben Amaro and Kevin Plawecki.
I was allowed to go all over the field and didn’t have to stand behind a rope. I even went into the dugout to get water for my mom and me. I got a couple of batting practice balls on the field and then went to speak to some of the people in the stands. I got to talk to some of the security guards I know, too. They were very surprised to see me on the field!
All of the people who work at Citi Field were very nice. They let me go to the dugout, and I even got meet Mets legend Ed Kranepool, who signed a ball for me. He took a photo with me and even said, “Feel better, kid.” Ed played mostly first base and was a member of the team their first year in the league in 1962. It was super cool meeting him. I even got Joey Votto from the Cincinnati Reds to sign a ball! Everyone from both organizations were very friendly, and I would like to thank the Mets organization for inviting me.
Now that I have a cast signed by the Mets, I am certainly the Ultimate Mets Fan!
