Country Farms in Medford is a great place for polo

I’ve been riding horses since I was 7, but there is one special thing about the place I ride. There is a polo team. That’s why Country Farms in Medford is so special.

When I’m older, I would love to play polo. Polo came from England in 1881. Now Long Island is the place to be if you want to play polo. There are two kinds of polo — arena polo and turf polo. Country Farms has a polo arena. The polo arena is about the size of an American football field.

There’s a lot of equipment involved. You need a helmet, elbow guards and knee pads (because you have to bump into each other with the horse). You also need a mallet and a ball (which looks like a mini-soccer ball). When hit properly, it can go up to 85 miles per hour.

Horses get their manes shaved and tails tied up so they don’t get caught on anything. They also need polo wraps on their ankles for protection. You can come watch a polo game at Country Farms on weekends (check the website).

They even go all year-round because they have an indoor arena. Learn more about Country Farms and about the polo team at
