One of my favorite places on Shelter Island is Sylvester Manor, which is an educational farm. For two years, I went to summer camp there with two of my friends and my brother.
We went on hikes through the woods, and we played games like ultimate tag. Sylvester Manor is such a fun place to learn history and work outside.
The farm is on North Ferry Road and you can go there during the spring, summer and fall. One house at Sylvester Manor was built in the 1730s. You can tour the house around Halloween, when they set up an event there. The house seems a little spooky because they say there are some “ghosts” running around. There is also a haunted hayride and you can carve pumpkins, too
You should go to Sylvester Manor to get your organic fruits and vegetables because they grow their own. During summer camp, we worked in the kids garden. At the end of the garden is a very old windmill that was built around the same time the house was built.
Kids ages 3 to 8 can sign up for summer camp, which lasts from July 4 to Aug. 26 in the mornings only. And this year, there’s a one-week Afternoons at the Farm camp from Aug. 1-5 for kids 9 to 11. At camp, we like to run on the fields of Sylvester Manor. Another thing my two friends, my brother and I like to do is run ahead when we are moving through the bamboo forest from the windmill to the kids garden. Don’t worry, we know where to go because there’s a dirt path.
At the end of the week at summer camp, there’s always a party. Sylvester Manor is really a fun place.
