Interview with soccer star Brendan Gallivan

Brendan Gallivan is a 12th-grader at Massapequa High School, and he also is on the boys varsity soccer team, which recently won the New York State championship.

He is a captain and center midfielder on the team and a very important player. He started to play soccer when he was about 4 years old. His parents gave him the opportunity to play, and he just really loved it and has been playing his whole life. He has always played for the Massapequa Soccer Club, and his team came together when the boys were 9. I had the opportunity to interview him about his incredible year and his life on and off the soccer field.

He told me it was a great honor to be one of the leaders for a team that won a New York State championship. He said that sometimes he would feel pressure, but that working with everyone on the team made it a lot easier. He added that it was even more fun because he was playing with his friends.

Even though his high school career is over and he is getting ready to play soccer at Marist College, I wanted to know, would he like to play more for this team? Brendan said, "Yes, definitely! It's probably the best team I've ever been on because of the memories. It felt like we weren't just teammates, we were also family."

Brendan was a very special player. He won his share of awards, including: All-County, All-State and All-Region. He was voted Conference and Class Player of the Year as well.

I asked him what responsibilities come with being a captain and a leader. Brendan said, "Always doing the right thing on and off the field and supporting your teammates. Always work hard, even when no one is watching, and also doing the right thing when no one is watching."

Finally, I asked him if anyone could become a leader, and Brendan said, "Yeah, I believe so. There are many different ways to be a leader, and there are different types of leaders. Ones that set examples quietly with their work and ones that are outspoken and vocal."
