Kayaks are perfect for kids because they are easy to use and you do not need a license. Kayaks can go in shallow water and you can look at fish without disturbing them. Here are my top beaches in the North Fork to kayak at:
KENNEY'S BEACH has rocks in the inlet if you like to kayak through rapids. This is only a small section of the inlet, so you will need to go against the currents. If the water is really clear, you can see building debris in the back of the inlet. You could also kayak up to a small bridge that is in the back left of the inlet. This is a good place to anchor your kayak and go hiking.
FOUNDERS LANDING is good for viewing sights of interesting homes with special features like a garage that floods for boats.
ORIENT BEACH STATE PARK also has a wide open space and you can watch race boats go by. Kayakers can snorkel off of their kayaks if they remember to bring an anchor so the boat does not float away.
GOOSE CREEK BEACH is the number one place to kayak for me because there are lots of little islands. One of the islands has a bird watching tower made of driftwood. Don't forget your binoculars. It is fun for kids to go on this island because they can climb the driftwood ladder. The North Fork of Long Island is such a great place to kayak because of all the beaches to choose from.
