I took a survey and asked 100 sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students what their main plans are going to be for the summer. Here are the results:

  • 30 kids said they are going away.
  • 24 kids are staying in their neighborhoods.
  • 20 kids are going to camp.
  • 15 kids will spend most days at a pool/beach club.
  • 11 kids said “other.”

One eighth-grader said she is going to Woodward cheer camp for a week. She told her parents that once camp is over, she will work at Madison’s Smoothie Cafe in Wantagh for the rest of the summer to help pay for her week away at camp. Another eighth-grader said he is going camping. He goes with his family to the Catskills, where they rent a trailer for a few weeks.

A couple of kids said they are planning to work for the summer; one of them is going to be working at a day camp with young kids.

For the kids who have vacations planned, most say they are going to Florida. A few are going to Fire Island and Cape Cod, one is going to Hawaii and one is visiting her family in Ecuador. Another student said she goes to water parks every year with her family. They have gone to about seven water parks through the years.

In the “other” category, one boy is spending the summer at his cousin’s house upstate, and a few have sports tournaments like lacrosse and volleyball.
