My Girl Scout troop, Troop 1273 from New Hyde Park, is making baby hats for preemies and collecting baby clothes for families in need. We are currently working on our silver award, and we have had so much fun making the hats and gathering all the clothes.

While deciding on what project to do for our award, we were also learning how to knit hats by hand for a skills patch. With all these hats now made, we soon thought of all the premature babies born and unable to wear a regular hospital hat because it would be too big, so we decided to make more hats ourselves! Each of us hand-knits a set number of hats using different color yarn and will deliver them to a local hospital.

For the baby clothes, we make announcements at our parish and set boxes in the back of the church so that people can easily donate clothes. This project has been so enjoyable, and we are excited knowing that we are touching many lives just by doing something as simple as knitting a hat.
