My interview with the Hummel-Hummel Bakery owner

I met with Susan Fruendt, owner of Hummel-Hummel Bakery (572 Larkfield Rd., East Northport; 631-266-3517).

Susan said the business was started in 1968 by her father-in-law. She said he was 14 when he began an apprenticeship for baking, which led to him opening and running the shop.

When he died, Susan took over the bakery. It makes many different things, but its most popular item is the pizza crumb.

There are about 25 different flavors of pizza crumb. I use the word about because a new kind of pizza crumb is coming out shortly.

Susan does not have a personal favorite treat at the bakery. "It depends on the season," she said.

The place does great business because everything is so delicious. Susan said she "would possibly like to go bigger. But I would never want to leave this location on Larkfield Road."

Stop in and have a crumbly time.
