My mom loves wearing beautiful handmade clothes. Her sweaters and dresses are so nice that lots of people ask where she gets them. Well, she makes them herself! She was complimented so much that now she makes them for others as well. And this is where my family and I come in. My grandmother, aunt, two sisters and I all help her.
She calls her designs Tumi Collections, and she makes a variety of clothing, such as scarves, hats, ponchos, mittens, sweaters and dresses. She also makes finger puppets and wall hangings for all ages. The items are all hand-knit and fabrics are imported from Peru.
The best part about working with my mom is that items made from where I come from surround me. Tumi Collections is an excellent line of clothing that people could wear for years to come. All the merchandise is made of alpaca wool. Alpaca wool is made from the fleece of alpacas -- a South American mammal that has a long, soft, silky coat.
My mother started this family business 20 years ago. Now I am helping her and getting to know more and more about the business. One day I will be in charge of the Tumi Collections store, and I am happy to be learning about my culture with this experience. When she goes to street fairs in Manhattan and Huntington, she sells it all! Want to see more? You can email her:
