In our school — Dawnwood Middle School in Centereach — we have a club called Peer Leadership. In this club we do different things.
For instance, in the beginning of the school year, we have a pep rally. During that time, we sell necklaces, temporary tattoos, handclappers, bracelets, etc. We also made posters for the pep rally. The money we collected was donated to Last Chance Animal Rescue in Southampton.
We also did a food donation drive. When we had our school dances, we had the students bring in a food item and we sorted the food into different groups. Once all the food was sorted out, we donated it to our local food pantry.
When the fifth-graders come in May for orientation, we give them a tour around the school. We sit with the group we are assigned to during the orientation. We answer any questions the students or the teachers have. We try to make them feel as comfortable as possible, because they will be our new schoolmates in the fall.
We also crochet blankets for homeless families. We pick out velvet material we like. Once we are done, we tie two knots and we cut the ends off.
Anyone can join this club. I loved participating in this club, and I definitely recommend it.
