Service Club honors those who serve

The Service Club is for third-, fourth- and fifth-graders at the Laddie A. Decker School in Miller Place. Mrs. Jennine McCann is a very nice teacher who runs the club.

Every year in the Service Club, we have a “Give Back Day,” a day when you honor the soldiers, veterans, police officers, firefighters and EMTs who take care of our community each day.

It is a very fun event, where club members take our honorees around the school to different classrooms and give them the opportunity to tell the kids about their jobs and also to answer questions. The school is decorated with posters that present messages of thanks to these special people for their service. At the end of the day we get to eat and chat with them.

Another ongoing event run by the Service Club is a recyclable bottle collection. We decorate boxes that go into each classroom until the end of the year. We collect the recyclable water bottles several times during the year, and the money goes back to the school to purchase things we need to make our school a better place.

The Service Club does positive things for the school community. Kids need to be part of something that makes others feel good.
