St. Baldrick's: Shaving our heads for cancer

Have you seen a lot of shaved heads around? We are shaving our heads to raise money for cancer research.

St. Baldrick's was started by Tim Kenny. Why did it start? It started because Tim Kenny made a challenge to his colleagues John Bender and Enda McDonnell. Tim Kenny asked, "How will you give back in return for your own good fortune in business?" Enda's big head of hair gave John the big idea to shave their heads for donations.

The St. Baldrick's event was started in our school, Jericho Elementary, by Eric Burchard, a fifth-grade teacher. Each shavee asks for donations from family, friends, neighbors, etc. In return, the shavee agrees to lose his or her locks during the event at school in support of those who lost their hair due to chemotherapy. If you don't want your head to be shaved you can get a stand-in.

Do you know anybody who has cancer? I do -- my aunt did. This is why I agreed to shave my head to help others (even though my hair isn't that long). It is a good donation.
