Super sailing in the windy winter

Winter sailing is also known as frostbiting. Winter sailing is mostly known to competitive sailors around the country. When I was introduced to it, I was nervous because the water is so much colder during the winter. At my yacht club, The Snapper Inn in Oakdale, we sail JY15 dinghies. Everyone on the sailing team is very competitive and some are even Olympic-level sailors.

There is a lot of gear you have to wear such as: dry suits (you can wear clothes under them and never get wet), winter gloves, waterproof boots, and a JY15. When you are racing, all you are thinking is “I am cold, get me off this boat.” But then again, how many people do you know who winter sail? There are fewer boats on the water so you have more freedom. It’s such a great experience that everyone should get to try it.
