The sun was shining bright on July 26, 2011. I was 6 years old, and I was wearing a white gown with a purple ribbon around my waist that matched my American Girl doll’s dress. I had a little bouquet of flowers that was purple and white.
My two dads were going to get married that day along with 55 other couples. My grandparents and closest friends came. I was so excited! Even though my parents had been together since 1995, they had not been allowed to get married.
Same-sex marriage had just been legalized in New York two days earlier. The event took place at Carlyle on the Green in Bethpage. The hall was decorated in purple and green flowers everywhere you looked, and a harpist played in the background. There were also a lot of news cameras, including those from NBC, ABC and News 12. My family was interviewed by ABC News and a German radio station.
