Tips for winning a debate

Every month, Mrs. MacDonald's fifth grade classroom has a debate. We usually base our debates off articles we have read or a current event issue. There is a pro and a con side of the argument. Each team is required to come up with five arguments and five possible rebuttals. Our first debate was on the topic of whether cursive writing should be taught in schools. It doesn't matter if you agree with the side you are put on. The objective is to explore an idea as thoroughly as possible and learn about different points of views. Who knows? You may just change your original opinion. Some tips that will help you and your team win a debate are:

1. Be creative

2. Get arguments for your team

3. Prepare to rebut (disprove)

4. Work as a team

5. Impress the audience
