10 Labor Day activities for kids on Long Island

If you're looking to take a break from the beach or barbecues this weekend, there are many fun Labor Day events for families. From family-friendly festivals to exploring nature, baseball games, cultural entertainment, art and more, there's so much to do on Long Island.

Slime Time: Family Program at Caleb Smith State Park (Jericho Tpke., Smithtown). On Saturday from 10-11:30 a.m., families can discover creatures that produce slime and learn the reasons why. Then, kids can make some slime of their own. Registration is required. Price: $4 per person; $8 parking fee.

Tanker Weekend at the Museum of American Armor (1303 Round Swamp Rd., Old Bethpage). Honor American soldiers who have served in the nation's armor divisions by operating in the field a Cold War M48 Patton tank, a WW II Sherman tank, a Pacific theater Stuart tank, an M18 Hellcat tank destroyer as well as halftracks, a British Bren Carrier and other tracked military vehicles on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Price: $12 adults, $8 children ages 5-12 and seniors, free children ages 5 and younger.

Shinnecock Powwow at the Shinnecock Powwow Grounds (Westgate Road, Southampton). Kids and adults alike will enjoy storytelling, crafts, native foods, tribal dances, drum competitions and more on Friday at 3 p.m., Saturday, Sunday and Monday at 10 a.m. Price: $15, $10 ages 6-12, free ages 5 and younger.

Seasonal Exhibit: Our Backyard at the Long Island Children's Museum (11 Davis Ave., Garden City). Explore the museum's sensory garden through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Create summer showers "on demand" using a hand pump and showerhead. Try racing boats down two rills and splash in the streambed. Make evaporation art or take the helm of their weather boat. Price: Free with museum admission ($13).

Cirque du Soleil: Ovo at Nassau Coliseum (1255 Hempstead Tpke., Uniondale). Circus arts set in a colorful ecosystem where insects work, eat, crawl, flutter, play, fight and look for love at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday and 1:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Sunday. Price: $44 and up.

Long Island Ducks vs. New Britian Bees at Bethpage Ballpark (3 Court House Dr., Central Islip). Cheer on your favorite local team at a baseball game on Friday at 6:35 p.m., Saturday at 6:35 p.m., Sunday at 1:35 p.m. and Monday at 1:35 p.m. Price: $12-$15.

Mother Cabrini Italian Feast at Suffolk County Community College, Grant Campus (1001 Crooked Hill Rd., Brentwood). Rides, Italian food specialties and entertainment on Friday from 6 to 11 p.m., Saturday through Monday from 4 to 11 p.m.; fireworks on Labor Day. Price: Free, fees for food and rides.

May the Force Be With You at Maritime Explorium (101 East Broadway, Port Jefferson). On Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., kids can experiment with the science behind natural forces and discover different ways to challenge and test them. Price: $5.

The Hampton Classic Horse Show (240 Snake Hollow Rd., Bridgehampton). Daily through Sunday, families can check out a 65 acre showground, more than 1,600 horses and more. Gates open at 8 a.m. Price: $10, $20 carload, free ages 6 and younger.

Imagination Station at Old Westbury Gardens (71 Old Westbury Rd., Old Westbury). On Sunday from noon to 4 p.m., this drop in play space gives children the opportunity to use their imaginations, which includes interactive toy materials for children to make their own fun. Prices: $12 adults, $7 children 7 and older, free children 6 and younger.
