Mayor Bill de Blasio and NYC & Company, New York City's official marketing, tourism and partnership organization, recently named Nickelodeon's Dora the Explorer as the seventh official NYC Family Ambassador.
Dora was chosen to encourage family travel to the five boroughs by highlighting New York City as a family-friendly destination. And for the first time, the Family Ambassador program will include English and Spanish content featuring activities and destinations for families to enjoy. "From the Staten Island Ferry and Times Square to the amazing diversity of Queens, the views from the Brooklyn Bridge Park and the wonderful Bronx Zoo, it's no surprise New York City has become a favorite family destination," Mayor de Blasio said in a news release. "I'm very excited to have Dora as our official embajadora to show families from across the globe the countless recreational and cultural riches of the five boroughs."
According to the company's news release, since the launch of the Family Ambassador program in 2009, family visits to New York City have grown by 30.3 percent and currently constitute 30.5 percent of total visitation to the metropolis. More than 100 million people watch "Dora the Explorer" every year, and it's seen in more than 150 countries.
As part of the campaign, an "Explore NYC with Dora" activity book will be available for families at a few hotels and cultural organizations later this summer. The book includes New York City-themed activities, facts and interactive elements.
Other NYC Family Ambassadors included Curious George (2014), "Where's Waldo?" (2013), The Muppets (2012) and The Smurfs (2011).
