A South Dakota mom has grabbed national attention for writing a provocative blog post speaking out against overprotective parenting.

Stephanie Metz, a 29-year-old mother to sons Hendrix, 4, and Jameson, 2, was inspired to write the post after her 4-year-old opted to choose a different toy for show-and-tell because he thought his initial pick could be mistaken for a gun.

Metz was outraged by this new mentality in her young son, claiming that society had taken away her child's right to play pretend and just be a boy.

"How long will it be before their typical boyish behavior gets them suspended from school?" she wrote of her sons, alluding to today's school administrators and their strict stance against anything that could be considered violent.

She also took a shot at another hot topic -- bullying -- saying that overprotective parents who dote on their children when they are teased are taking away their ability to cope.

“Understand, I am not condoning kids to be cruel to each other," Metz told ABC News in an interview. "But I think kids need to toughen up when kids are not nice to them.”

According to the news outlet, Metz had only eight followers before writing the post. Now her blog has attracted over 750,000 hits.
