2012 marks the 50th anniversary of "The Snowy Day" by Ezra Jack Keats, which won a 1963 Caldecott Medal. In honor of that milestone is the 50th anniversary edition (Viking Juvenile, $19.99). The hardcover picture book, for ages 5 and older, tells the story of a boy named Peter who explores the snow that's fallen overnight; it was a trailblazer for its time because it featured an African-American child. This edition includes eight pages of bonus material, including a letter from poet Langston Hughes.

A new Inflatable Ice Skating Form from Hearthsong lets you turn the backyard into an ice-skating rink 10.5 feet in diameter, big enough for two children. Inflate, fill with water and wait for it to freeze. Deflates and stores. Add a foot pump to make inflating easier. $59.98 for rink, $11.98 for pump at hearthsong.com, 800-325-2502.

The Snofling Snow Ball Throwing Stick is perfect for family snowball battles. It helps form and fling snowballs; users advise ordering one for each family member and a few extras for guests. $7.66 each at Amazon.com.
