The fourth annual Nikolina’s Attic charity garage sale, which raises money to buy toys for kids fighting pediatric cancer at Stony Brook University Hospital, is set for 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday through Monday at Lake Grove Village Hall, 980 Hawkins Ave., Lake Grove.

The event was born after Nikolina Johannessen, then 5, of Lake Grove, finished her treatment for leukemia and wanted to donate all her toys to the kids still there, says her mom, Kristen. After Kristen explained that the kids could have only new toys, Nikolina wanted to sell her old toys and give the money to the hospital to buy new ones.

“There was a snowball effect,” Kristen says, with other people wanting to donate for the sale. The three-day sale now raises between $8,000 and $12,000 a year, Kristen says.

Nikolina, now 9 and in fourth grade, will be there, selling bracelets and headbands that she made herself. “At the front door, I have a little table and I usually sell little things there for $1 or 25 cents,” she says.
