Nassau County high school students can enter the Second Annual Nassau County Student Poetry Contest sponsored by the Long Island Arts Council at Freeport and Dover Publications in celebration of National Poetry Month in April.
The contest is open to all students enrolled in grades 9 through 12 (including home-schooled and tutored children). The goal is to inspire those students who may never have written a poem to write one, and to encourage those who have to further develop the art. Entries will be judged on originality, creativity, and artistic quality. The winning poems will be published on the Long Island Arts Council at Freeport’s website and will be published in a booklet.
Entries must be postmarked by March 31 and mailed to the Long Island Arts Council at Freeport, 130 E. Merrick Rd., Freeport, N.Y., 11520. There is an entry fee of $5 regardless of how many entries the student submits. Checks made out to the Long Island Arts Council at Freeport must be included with submission. Parents must fill out a permission form (download from the website) and include it (signed) with the submission.
Winners will be announced April 24. For more information and contest rules, call 516-223-2522, email firstname.lastname@example.org or visit liacfreeport.org.
