Mother of four Rosie Pope knows a thing or two about parenting. In March of this year, she welcomed another daughter named Bridget Monroe with her husband, Daron Pope.
The star of Bravo's "Pregnant in Heels" is also the founder of Rosie Pope Maternity, MomPrep and Rosie Pope Baby, as well as author of "Mommy IQ: The Complete Guide to Pregnancy" (It Books; $19.99).
I recently caught up with the London-born mom about her kids, maternity line and balancing it all. Here's what she had to say:
Q. Congrats on welcoming Bridget Monroe to your family! How did J.R., Wellington and Vivienne react to the new baby?
They love her. I think they are all used to having babies around so it is amazing to see how easily they have embraced her and try to help take care of her. She is one very loved little babe.
Q. How was it transitioning from three kids to four? Are the siblings jealous of Bridget? Any advice to ward off sibling jealousy?
It's funny, you often hear that once you've had three, then adding another isn't that much harder. Well, I'm not so sure about that right now as things are crazy! It is wonderful to see how this little team is developing. They have started to play so well together and help each other to help me. The jealousy this time around is very different. Of course it's there but it's not like going from one to two as the kids are used to having siblings. The jealousy is less about Bridget and just more about them wanting more time with mommy in general. I've found the best way to ward off jealousy is to follow these three rules: First, always find one-on-one time with the other siblings even if it's in the strangest of places -- the supermarket, bathroom, walking into school -- you have to take it where you can get it and when you have support from family, be sure to do something elaborate. Second, always be positive about the baby, so try not to let him/her become the crux of why you're not spending quality of time with your other kids. Third, even if they are young, include them in what you are doing with the baby. You can make things like feeding a family bonding time where everyone has some quiet time with books and so on, so they don't feel excluded but instead part of the bonding. You do have to accept, though, that it won't always be easy but remember this too shall pass!
Q. What was the best advice you received while you were pregnant? What was the worst?
"This is the gravy" -- I know it sounds a little strange but it means stop waiting to enjoy; don't be consumed by all the anxiety because this is one of the most amazing times in your life. Becoming a mother is the gravy in life!
There is so much bad advice out there I am not sure which was the worst. The silliest was that if I didn't stop drinking so much sparkling water my baby was going to be in a sack of bubbles and my breast milk would be full of gas.
Q. What advice do you have for new moms?
Arm yourself with quality education to give yourself the confidence to enjoy your baby. The first weeks and months are so precious I hate to see new parents not be present in them because they are so worried about everything. Being present in every moment is not easy but it is a key ingredient of great parenting.
Q. How do you balance your work and family life?
Stop worrying about balancing everything all the time. We talk about this balance today so much I find it only adds to the pressure. The truth is there isn't a whole lot of balance when you have little kids, but I see life in phases rather than getting bogged down in today and feeling like you can't fit everything in. Fit in what's important now and over time your time and your priorities will change. But don't make "balance" yet another stressful thing we feel we have to achieve. My life is not balanced right now and that's OK.
Q. What's up next for you?
I am continuing to expand Rosie Pope Baby as it has been a huge success this launch season. Rosie Pope Maternity is also now available on Nordstrom.com and shopbop.com, which is very exciting as it is an honor to have my maternity clothes available at some of the most fashionable websites world wide.
