Looking for things to do with the kids this weekend? From "The Wizard of Oz" and "Matilda" to nature walks and more, there is plenty happening on Long Island. Here are my top five picks for family-friendly activities during the weekend:
Nature Study and Woodland Walk at Bailey Arboretum (194 Bayville Rd. and Feeks Lane, Lattingtown). Saturday, at 3 p.m., children ages 10 and older will take a walk to look for birds, fish, turtles, aquatic insects and more. In the woodland, they'll explore trees, plants and soils. Price: Free.
The Funny Man Show at Caumsett State Historic Park Preserve (25 Lloyd Harbor Rd., Lloyd Neck). Ellis Adler, creator and star of "The Funny Man Show," will perform for children, showing them the process of being a clown, Saturday at 10 a.m. Price: Free.
"The Wizard of Oz" at Long Island Children's Museum (11 Davis Ave., Garden City) On Saturday and Sunday at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m., watch Dorothy, the Tin Man, Scarecrow and Lion as they follow the Yellow Brick Road to Oz. Price: $12.
Talking Trash: Making a World of Difference in Your Own Backyard at Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge (340 Smith Rd., Shirley). Local photographer Sean Keenan will discuss the challenges animals face due to trash and balloons; recommended for families with children ages 12 and older, Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Price: Free.
Movies in the Park: "Matilda" at Clinton G. Martin Park (1601 Marcus Ave., New Hyde Park). Watch the 1996 American fantasy children's film based on Roald Dahl's novel, starring Danny DeVito, Rhea Perlman and Mara Wilson, Sunday at 7:30 p.m. The movie is rated PG. Price: Free.
