Weekend family fun on Long Island: 'Beauty and the Beast,' ice cream and more

Looking for things to do with the kids this weekend? From "Beauty and the Beast" and "Peter Pan" to ice cream and more, there is plenty happening on Long Island. Here are my top five picks for family-friendly activities during the weekend:

Ice Cream Social at the Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery and Aquarium (1660 Rte. 25A, Cold Spring Harbor). On Saturday, from 4 to 6 p.m., families are encouraged to cool off and meet up with other families at an ice cream social. Price: Free with aquarium admission ($6 adults, $4 children ages 4-12, free children ages 3 and younger.

"Beauty and the Beast" at Harry Chapin Lakeside Theater of Eisenhower Park (Hempstead Turnpike and Merrick Avenue, East Meadow). A Plaza Productions performance of this classic fairy tale on Sunday, from 1 to 4 p.m. It will be held outdoors; bring a lawn chair or blanket. Price: Free, park in Field #6.

Let's Play: Old Fashioned Toys at William Floyd Estate (245 Park Dr., Mastic Beach). Children can explore some classic games, including Jacob's Ladder, marbles, spin tops and more on Saturday, from 11 a.m. to noon. Price: Free.

"Peter Pan The Musical" at Smithtown Center for the Performing Arts (2 E. Main St., Smithtown). On Friday at 7 p.m., Sunday at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m., follow a mischievous boy who can fly and spends his never-ending childhood adventuring on the small island of Neverland. Price: $30 adults, $20 children.

Explore Nanotechnology: The Science of Very Small at the Maritime Explorium (101 E. Broadway, Port Jefferson). Kids can measure the power of the sun by making their own UV bracelet on Saturday and Sunday, from 1 to 5 p.m. Price: $5.
