The poetry awards ceremony at the Walt Whitman Birthplace Historic Site, 246 Old Walt Whitman Rd., Huntington Station.

Eight young poets will read their award-winning works at the awards ceremony for the 29th Annual Young Poets Contest at noon May 31 at the Walt Whitman Birthplace Historic Site, 246 Old Walt Whitman Rd., Huntington Station.

Long Island teachers submitted entries of students in grades 3 to 12 and winners were notified in mid-May. The poems were judged by a panel of published poets. This year, Yusef Komunyakaa is featured as the distinguished contemporary poet who will address the attendees, perform some of his poetry and assist in the distribution of prizes to the eight young readers and other winners.

The event is free. For information, call 631-427-5240, ext. 113.
