Kimberly Orlic wants Garden City residents to abandon bagged tea. Behind the counter of her month-old store, A New Leaf, are stout, gold-colored canisters containing 60 varieties of teas, all of which are sold "loose leaf" by weight. "It's more cost-effective to buy tea loose than in bags," she said. "And the tea is fresher when you buy it that way, too."

In order to convince her customers, Orlic has to show them how easy loose tea is to brew. To that end, she also sells teapots and large teacups with removable strainers and, even simpler, disposable paper envelopes that you fill to make a custom tea bag. Every package of tea she sells comes with instructions for how much tea to use, how long to brew and at what temperature.

The store is elegant and interactive. Customers are welcome to take a whiff of any of the wares, or buy a brewed cup (12 ounces for $3.25) of any tea to take out or to drink in the sunny seating area -- along with a scone, cookie or biscotto.

But the heart of A New Leaf is the loose teas. There are classic blacks such as English Breakfast and Earl Grey, plus green teas, oolongs (between green and black), white teas and a dozen caffeine-free tisanes, from classics such as chamomile and peppermint to a customized Garden City blend featuring pineapple (Garden City's symbol), apple, orange and rose hips.

Orlic is partial to the Monk's Blend from Sri Lanka, a black tea flavored with vanilla and grenadine.

Most teas cost $7 to $10 for 50 grams (1.7 ounces, enough for 20 to 25 cups). Six-gram samples sell for $1.50.
