Supermodels and super clothes abounded at Alexander Wang’s show on Saturday night as Gisele Bündchen, Shalom Harlow and Karolina Kurkova made rare runway appearances on the large, rectangular runway that was punctuated with thick-mirrored pillars.
Bündchen wore a stiff, black leather military-style coat buttoned up to her chin but slit thigh- high. It looked like protective gear to ward off the elements … or New York Giants-frenzied fans (the model is married to New England Patriots’ quarterback Tom Brady and has been the subject of controversy of late).
She needn’t have fretted. Fashion Week loves a famous supermodel, and the crowd cheered when she walked.
And they cheered for Wang’s strong collection that primarily offered sportswear and coats in black, white and oxblood.
The designer experimented with fabric treatments coating many a look with a lacquered, liquidy sheen, or creating texture with a pebbled effect.
Most models were virtually disguised with fishnet turtlenecks pulled up over their mouths and vinyl visors shielding their eyes. Toward the end of the run, there were a few softer looks – fringy white pieces that artfully draped around bodies.
At the finale, a jubilant Wang bounded onto the runway to take a bow. He probably knows this collection of cool-girl chic will have mass appeal.
